Abstract
Although maxillofacial surgery dates only from the 1940s as a distinct speciality in Spanish medicine, numerous contributions to this field were made by Spanish surgeons in the l9th and early 20th centuries. Extensive maxillofacial surgery has been made possible by the same improvements as have benefitted surgery in general: first, in the early years of this century, by advances in topographical anatomy and standardization of operation procedures; later, by the development of techniques of anaesthesia, haemostasia, blood transfusions, antisepsis and asepsis, and by the refinement of surgical instruments.
