Abstract
Objective. This preliminary study was conducted to determinate if seasonality in bipolar admissions follows an specific pattern in a sample of galician inpatients in Santiago de Compostela. Methods. Sample studied was randomized among all inpatients with diagnosis of bipolar disorder during a period of 5 years. So, charts of half of these patients were reviewed. Results. One hundred ninety-nine admissions with diagnosis of bipolar disorder were reviewed. There were 129 mania/ mixed admissions (66,15%) and 66 depressed patients admission (33,33%). Seasonal pattern were found for manic/mixed episodes: spring 36 (27,90%), summer 40 (31%), autumn 23 (17,82%) and winter 30 (23,25%). A different seasonality for depression: spring 15 (23,06%), summer 14 (21,54%), autumn 12 (18,46%) and winter 24 (36,92%). Conclusion. A pattern of spring-summer mania and winter depression in bipolar admission was described in Santiago de Compostela (Galiza).
