Abstract

Introduction Alcohol consumption is responsible for an overall mortality rate of 6%. Alcohol use disorders The alcohol abuse as well as alcohol dependence is now involved in a broader concept known of AUD (Alcohol Use Disorders). While acute alcohol produces a depressant effect of the central nervous system, chronic use produces an inhibition of the excitatory GABA system and superregulacion of glutamate, dopamine as well as an increased activation of the opioid system. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome Alcohol withdrawal syndrome occurs after cessation of chronic alcohol use and is the main complication of alcohol dependence. Treatment The most used drugs are benzodiazepines (GABA stimulators) for the wide therapeutic window, having no cross-tolerance with alcohol and antidote available in case of overdose. In chronic treatment should evaluate all modulating drugs of neurotransmitters involved.
