Abstract
This article reports a scanning electron microscope study of the behaviour of compound resins used to seal fissures in teeth previously treated in vivo or in the laboratory. Faults in the adhesion of the resins to the walls of the fissure are interpreted as due to in sufficiently etched enamel or to contraction of the resin during hardening. lnsufficient filling of the fissure is attributed to air having been trapped within it, to the presence of organic debris or to the viscosity of the resins. The flaws most often detected in the hardened resins were folds, fractures and air bubbles, whose presence or absence contributes decisively to the success or failure of the sealing process.
