Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the performance of contact lenses for the visual correction on keratoconus. Methods: We fitted 206 eyes (115 patients) with keratoconus. Patients were fitted with rigid gas permeable contact lenses, SoftPerm and CSI lenses. We determined the base curve using diagnostic lenses for fitting and evaluating stability of lens, centering, fluorescein pattern, visual acuity, and tolerance. Results: Rigid gas permeable contact lenses were fitting on 94,6% keratoconus patients. Fifty per cent eyes were treated with small rigid gas permeable contact lenses. The average visual acuity was 0,78±0,2. The patients had a good tolerance during all the day (59,2%). The severity of keratoconus and the tolerance showed a significant diference (p < 0,02, stage III; p < 0,01, stage IV). In nipple-shaped topography we fitted small rigid gas permeable lenses (78,8%) and with peripheral shaped fitted large lenses. Conclusion: The optic correction with rigid gas permeable lenses provided the best visual performance for subjects with keratoconus. The topographic pattern influence to fit the types of rigid gas permeable lenses, and the severity of keratoconus influence the tolerance.
