Resumo

Study design: Analysis of 112 Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsies (FNAB) of salivary glands (80 parotid and 32 submaxillary) carried out between January 1991 and December 1995. Results: All cytologicfindings were compared to histologicalfindings of surgical specimens. Percentage sensitivity and specificity obtained were 84.84% and 93.67% respectively; accuracy was 91.07%. Conclusions: The conclusion reached is that FNAB, as a single diagnostic procedure, does not provide total security dueto a high percentage of false-negatives. lt is nevertheless useful when combined with good anamnesis and adequate examination and radiological tests.
