Abstract

SincethefirstsuccessfulpalliationwasperformedbyNorwoodetal.in1983,therehavebeensubstantialchangesindiagnosis,management,andoutcomesofhypoplasticleftheartsyndrome,Survivalforstage1palliationhasincreasedto90%inmanycentres,withpatientspotentiallysurvivingintoadulthood.However,theassociatedmorbidityandmortalityremainsubstantial Althoughtheprinciplesofstagedsurgicalpalliationofhypoplasticleftheartsyndromearewellestablished,thereissignificantvariabilityinsurgicalprocedureandmanagementbetweencentres,andseveralcontroversialaspectsremainunresolved.Inthisreview,wesummarizethecurrentsurgicalandmanagementoptionsfornewbornswithhypoplasticleftheartsyndromeandtheiroutcomes.
