Abstract
Introduction: Post-stroke Shoulder Pain (PSSP) is a syndrome which shows no conclusive data on its epidemiology, etiopathogenesis and clinical approach. The aim of this investigation was to obtain epidemiologic information on PSSP and identify PSSP onset related-factors, which might improve the diagnosis and clinical management. Methods: Nested Case-Control study. Sociodemographic data, clinical history information, stroke clinical characteristics, stroke-related symptoms and clinical care parameters were collected. Statistical analysis consisted of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann-Whitney, Student´s t, Fisher´s exact and Chi Square test, one way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Tuckey test, Cox regression and COR curve; considering statistically significant when p<0,05. Results: A total of 119 individuals (21%) were diagnosed with PSSP. Factors as Age, medical history data, stroke-related symptoms and stroke-clinical care characteristics were associated with PSSP. Two PSSP profiles that differed significantly in relation to the onset and clinical course were detected. A risk assessment model was developed, which showed a discriminatory power of 81%. Conclusions: Several factors were related to PSSP onset which may vary considerably, complicating its health care. The present study showed additional data which might facilitate prophylactic approach on post-stroke patients.
