Abstract

Santiago de Compostela has become one of the most important destinations of religious tourism in Spain and internationally since hosting the tomb of the apostle St. James and being the end point of the Christian pilgrimage route, which crosses Europe. The city has also an important cultural and architectural heritage, and its old town is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. These characteristics make Santiago one of the main destinations of cultural tourism. Moreover, in recent years reemerged here other tourism products, such as conference tourism, and academic tourism. The coexistence of various types of tourism in this destination allows us to investigate the differences and similarities between various types of tourists visiting the city. The aim of this paper is to analyze some variables such as satisfaction or perceived authenticity for tourists who come to Santiago de Compostela for religious reasons, compared to cultural tourists. Empirical data were collected from a sample of 400 tourists in 2010, during the celebration of the Holy Year
