Abstract
Disc herniation is a common disorder in adults however, its occurrence in adolescence is much less frequent and extremely rare in children. The etiology and clinical manifestations may be different from disc herniation in adults. Neurological symptoms are infrequent in children and adolescents, and the diagnosis may be delayed for this reason. We report the case of an obese 11- year old girl with a 1-week history of left-side leg pain and incapacity for walking. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a posterocentral dics herniation at the L5-S1 level with compression of the S1 nerve root. Surgical intervention was indicated because the conservative treatment failed.
