Abstract

Skin aging is a physiological process that all people suffer. In this sense, the skin undergoes structural and functional changes showing up with a certain clinic. The main objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of skin and nail disease in a population over 65 years old, residents of the geriatric centre of St. Maria de Ois in the province of A Coruna. The final sample consisted of 48 residents with a mean age of 84.25 years (range 65-95 years). 15 men and 33 women were studied. The most frequent cutaneous pathology was xerosis (66.7%) followed by callus (20.8%), pressure ulcers (12.5%), keratoderma (4.2%), stucco keratosis (2.1%), chronic eczema (2.1%) and ochre dermatitis (2.1%). The most prevalent nail disorders were in this order onychomycosis (45.8%), onychogryphosis (43.8%), longitudinal bands (27.1%), nail dystrophy (18.7%), nails half-half (14.6%) and longitudinal melanonychia (4.2%).
