Abstract

Over the last decades, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of valvular heart disease in elderly patients have changed. Elderly patients undergo more diagnostic and therapeutic procedures due to the significant increase of life expectancy and the improvement in quality of life. Significant development in the cardiovascular area with improved percutaneous treatments and surgical procedures has taken place in recent decades. Different studies show that elderly patients who have been operated on for valvulopathies improve their quality of life and their survival rates are similars to that of the population of the same age. For this reason, therapeutic approaches to valvular elderly patients are changing. The aim of the diagnostic protocol is to present a guide for physicians in order to select the best possible management strategies for the individual patient suffering from a specific valvular heart disease.
