Abstract

The consumption of psychoactive substances has been consistently associated with the presence of alterations in different neuropsychological processes: speed of processing, memory, attention or executive functions, which have been related to deterioration in daily functioning and less effectiveness of conventional treatments, and justify the need for integrate the neuropsychological approach in the treatment of addictions. The objective of this work is to study the neuropsychological and symptomatological alterations in patients with substance-related disorders. A neuropsychological evaluation was applied to a sample of people with disorders related to a treatment in a day unit. The results reflect a neuropsychological performance indicative of moderate cognitive impairment, reduced speed of psychomotor, reading and visuospatial processing, deficits in the subprocesses of sustained attention, selective and alternating, and difficulties in the executive components of inhibition and cognitive flexibility. At the level of psychopathological symptoms, clinical manifestations of obsession-compulsion, depression, anxiety and psychoticism have been found. The determination of the neuropsychological and symptomatological profile in these patients contributes to improve diagnosis, work awareness of the deficit and optimize the individualization of treatment programs.
