Abstract

Objective: To describe the diagnostic tests and therapeutic management of patients admitted to a tertiary hospital and discharged with the transient ischemic attack diagnostic. Material and method: Cross sectional retrospective study of 367 patients discharged with a diagnosis of TIA between January of 2006 and December of 2008. Results: Diagnostic tests led to the discovery of some abnormality in the 15.6 % of electrocardiograms, 7% of the cranial computed tomographic (CT), 15.2 % of the supra-aortic arteries ecodoppler and 25.7 % of the echocardiograms. 1.9 % of the patients presented a cardioembolic complication during a hospital admission. At discharge 82.1 % of the patients were antiaggregated and 19.1% were anticoagulated. The mean of the stay were 9,5 ± 9,1 days. Conclusions: Performing evidence-based diagnostic tests over the first 48 hours after suffering a TIA improves the efficacy and safety, reducing costs.
