Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness, safety and maternal satisfaction of stimulating an acupunture point (67V) with two techniques: moxibustion and acupressure, to induce cephalic version from breech presentation. Methodology: a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial. 346 pregnant women carrying a fetus in breech presentation were randomly assigned into two groups: moxibustion therapy (n = 163) or acupressure (n = 183). There was an observation group with 49 women agreeing to enter the study, but not to receive treatment. Main outcome measure: cephalic presentation at the end of the intervention (36 weeks gestation). Results: in the moxibustion group 30% were cephalic version, comparared with 20,4% in the observation group (RR: 1,47), and 32,2% in the acupressure group (RR: 1,57). There were no severe adverse effects during treatment and the maternal satisfaction was high in both groups. Conclusions: It might be useful to offer both tecniques to pregnant women carrying fetuses with non cephalic presentation with updated and realistic information abouth effectiveness.
