Abstract

Objective: The objective of the performed work is to identify risks associated with the handling of cytostatics drugs in the implementation of intraperitoneal chemotherapy with hyperthermia (HIPEC) applied according to Sugarbaker technique and different solutions applied to their control. Method: The detection and assessment of the risks as well as the proposal and selection of the various control implemented, were conducted to the following guidelines: interview and study of the activity with the involved personnel specialist, bibliographic study, identification of legal and regulatory requirements, and establishing control measures. Due to the measures taken (adherence to measures) and the effectiveness of the measures taken (number of accidents and incidents) the satisfaction level was found by consulting the parts concerned. Results: Risk tasks and major routes of exposure were identified. Control measures were determined for inhalation and dermal exposures, in line with the requirements for the protection of workers and for use in surgical field, minimizing the disconformity that could lead to staff. Conclusions: It reveals the possibility of combining protection of personnel, compliance with regulatory requirements, preservation of the surgical field and staff comfort. Through training and information activities and cooperative work of the different services involved, a high degree of acceptance was achieved by staff involved in prevention measures in place. The concern of staff downplayed against occupational risks involved in HIPEC was minimized. As closing of preventive actions, checking the effectiveness of the measures taken is recommended through quantitative evaluation.
