Resumo

Backgrounds and objectives. The group of persons who are at least 100 years old is proportionally growing every year much more than any other. We do not know their clinical and functional situation. Patients and methods. The Spanish National Registry of Centenarians (RENACE) is a demographic, epidemiological and biological registry which is voluntary and anonymized, consisting in a prospective series of cases, promoted by the SEMG (Spanish Society of Medical Practitioners and Family Doctors). Results. A total of 73 persons were enrolled in the pilot phase (median age, 102), 58 women (79.5 %). Of these, 69.9 % (p= 0.01) were born in the first half of the year. 81.9 % knew how to read and 47.2 % still read; 71.8 % watched television. Their functional evaluation (median, Barthel scale) was 44/100 and cognitive function (Pfeiffer) was 5/10. Hearing loss is present in 81.7 % and 45.1 % go out alone or accompanied. The men are more independent than the women (p= 0.01). The most frequent chronic diseases they have are arthrosis (68.1 %) and high blood pressure (46.5 %). Drugs used the most are proton pump inhibitors (47.9 %) and paracetamol (45.2 %). In the last year, 30% were admitted to the hospital and 63 % had undergone surgery during their lifetime. Health was self-evaluated as good by 62.7 %. Conclusion. The proportion of persons of at least 100 years of age is increasing in Spain progressively and unstoppably. Their general, functional and cognitive health status is on the average good, within the fragility and pluripathological complexity of this heterogeneous age group.
