Abstract

Age discrimination limits access to the elderly and the benefits of technological advances, because the elderly are recruited to a lesser extent in clinical trials. This is partly the result of negative stereotypes about ability, and conformity with the requirements for participation in research. A compendium of ethical requirements and legal regulations governing the participation of human subjects in biomedical research can destroy the research initiative to recruit older patients, because of the difficulty in complying with ethical issues. In addition a "overprotection" misunderstood about this population, may lead to unfair settlement: the limitation of results coming research and that could benefit them as group. It is essential abolish such practices so that older people gain maximum advantage of the advances that occur in health care.
