Abstract

Objectives: smoking (prevalence 23%) is cause of 25 health problems. Family doctor should approach because 75% of the population go to the consultation at least once a year. The aim of this study is to know the motivation of our patients to stop smoking. Design: retrospective research with telephone surveys Setting: primary health care. Participants: patients tagged like “smokers” in medical records, over 15 years old. N=276 Main measurements: Patients’ and family doctors’ characteristics were collected, doing comparisons between smoking habits and motivation to stop it. SPSS 22.0 and Epidat 4.1 were used for the analysis. Results: 52.2% women. Overage 50.57 (±12.40) years. 63% smokers and motivated to stop smoking. 20.7% ex-smokers. 57.6% have received counseling. Significant relation between the motivation and family doctor characteristics (ex-smoker) (p=.015), and inverse relation between counseling received and current patient condition (p<.001). Main conclusions: evidence of little update of smokers on medical records. More smokers’ patients who have not received counseling, probably due to more motivation, without discarding other causes like doctor abilities or resources available. Exsmoker family doctors have more motivated smoker patients.
