Abstract

The prevalence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is progressively increasing despite the fact that the heterogeneity of its etiology and presentation sometimes makes the diagnostic process complex. Currently, a stepped diagnostic protocol is recommended that considers the findings of an initial clinical evaluation and additional basic tests followed by a targeted echocardiographic study and, if necessary, additional advanced tests such as an exercise echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization, or cardiac magnetic resonance. Once the diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction has been established, an etiological diagnosis can be made, as it has important therapeutic implications in many cases.
