Abstract
Airway management in the critically burned patient is a high life-threatening approach and serious complication. The initial assessment of the airway should be aimed at the detection of symptoms and signs that allow to anticipate the occurrence of a difficult airway. The professionals should know the mechanism of injury (direct and/or by inhalation), the affected anatomical area (upper airway or parenchyma) and have a high suspicion of poisoning by gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide…) from combustion when the injury occurs in a closed environment. Diagnostic techniques, such as fibrobroncoscopy, should also be used to help establish the optimal timing of endotracheal intubation
