Abstract

Objective: To know the therapeutic efficacy of the use of topical ozone (TOZ) for the healing of chronic wounds, according to the literature. Method: A narrative literature review was carried out. Four of the main electronic databases related to Health Sciences were consulted: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library Plus and CINAHL. After the search, quantitative studies with humans were selected based on clinical trials with or without randomization, analytical observational studies and clinical cases published in the last 20 years. Results: A total of 90 articles were obtained. After discarding the duplicates; apply the inclusion and exclusion criteria; and reading the title, summary and full text; finally, 8 relevant articles were selected to carry out this review. Conclusions: After the analysis of the 3 quasi-experimental studies and 5 RCTs, the healing effect of TOZ can be affirmed in diabetic foot ulcers, mainly; and in chronic venous ulcers, although to a lesser extent. The healing effect of TOZ on pressure injuries remains to be confirmed, since the literature is scarce; therefore, it is necessary to do more research on chronic wounds.
