Abstract

The evolution of art has gone hand in hand with scientific and technological evolution. Some materials and techniques have given rise to new artistic movements, and some materials and techniques have been developed to meet the demands of artists. Artists make use of the tools that science and technology provide them with, not only because of their plastic characteristics, but also as part of the communication code (a bronze sculpture does not mean the same when made of steel or made of wood). Materials have an important symbolic charge, very specially in modern and contemporary art, which is part of the study of semiotics, to understand which it would be pertinent to have a proper scientific knowledge, very especially about chemistry. The vision of the semiotics of modern and contemporary art from the point of view of science is the most innovative and original contribution of this research. The results of this research on the links between science and art have been used as a strategy for science dissemination and as a successful way of multidisciplinary approach to scientific culture.
