Abstract

Abstract. Hematuria is an increasingly frequent clinical entity due to the higher average age of the population and the progressive number of people who take anticoagulants and antiaggregants chronically. Hematuria is the most common cause of emergency hospital admissions in urology services and its treatment has important health and economic repercussions. Frank hematuria sustained for several hours may produce hypovolemic shock and have a fatal outcome. For this reason, in addition to the urologists themselves and hospital nursing, it is necessary for emergency and primary care doctors, who must deal with this condition frequently, to improve their knowledge and skills in the urgent evaluation of these very common episodes. However, few articles deal with hematuria as a medical emergency, such as resolving spasms or catheter patency, and finally, the steps and tricks to effectively perform bladder lavage in difficult cases.
