Abstract

Introduction Ventilated patients may experience respiratory secretion retention, and respiratory physiotherapy is a tool for its management. Acute brain injuries often contraindicate the application of these techniques due to the potential increase in intracranial pressure. Methods We applied rapid chest compression to a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage ventilated for 48hours. We recorded vital signs and ventilatory flows to verify the safety and effectiveness of the technique. Arterial gases were extracted to monitor variables. Results The application of the technique did not result in an immediate or delayed increase in intracranial pressure, allowing improvement in blood oxygen partial pressure. The correct execution of the technique was confirmed by the flow differential. Conclusion Rapid chest compression was safe in this patient with improvement in gasometric parameters.
