Resumo

Objective. To ascertain the availability, motivation and opinion of nursing professionals regarding the updating and improvement of their knowledge, skills and attitudes for the management of cardiac patients. Methods. Cross-sectional descriptive study, with nurses, nursing technicians (NT) in the health area of Ferrol. An ad hoc questionnaire of 21 questions, with 60 variables. A descrip-tive analysis, bivariate analysis differentiating nurses and NT and multivariate analysis of the significant variables, using the SPSS v21.0 programme were carried out. Results. 74.8% have participated in some training activity in cardiology (electrocardiogra-phy (ECG) (65.8%)). They prefer face-to-face sessions (53.4%), by means of a course accred-ited (65.1%) by a scientific society (63%). 91.8% would like to be trained in order to be able to perform functional tests (no NT). 6.6% of NTs have taken courses in cardiology (p<0.001). Nurses preferred courses on ischaemic heart disease (p=0.006), drug titration (p<0.001), ECG (p=0.001), chest pain (p= 0.005) or arrhythmias and electrophysiology (p<0.001), while NT preferred courses on «care during hospitalisation». After multivariate analysis, the tru-ly significant variables on training are: arrhythmias and electrophysiology (p= 0.009) for nurses and “care during hospitalisation” (p=0.035) and “arrhythmias and electrophysiolo-gy” (p=0.0013) for NT. They believe that nursing knowledge in cardiology is limited, the current training is very scarce and of short duration, and should be extended to the TCAE. They consider that it should be regulated training, which should be repeated in order to renew the knowledge learned and to update it. Conclusions. Continuous training adapted to the care needs and preferences of the staff favours professional development and helps to share information on available scientific knowledge.
