Resumo

Old patients population requiring cardiac surgery has increased. Euro Heart Survey (HVS) and other epidemiological studies have reported a rising prevalence of valvulopathies among elderly population. Older age is associated with a higher frequency of comorbidity with important management implications. Age and associated comorbidities are the major prognostic markers for valvulopathies surgery, though populations having undergone surgical treatment may present different prognostic. In recent years, two new surgical risk markers have emerged: frailty and impairment. New risk factors and new risk scales, in addition to the former (age and comorbidities), should be taken in account to select the optimal treatment.
