Abstract

Objective: to analyze the key words used in seven of the main Spanish Journals on Nursing, and confirm their adaptation to the recommendations by Health Sciences Descriptors (DesCS). Method: a transversal descriptive study of the 1,639 key Spanish words used in the 391 articles published during 2014, and confirmation in the DesCS thesaurus of the Virtual Health Library. Results: there was a 45% rate of incorrect words according to the terminology recommended, even though the first ten were valid descriptors. The most frequently repeated key words not accepted as descriptors were: “descriptive study”, “prevention”, and “dependence”. Conclusions: with more than four invalid key words out of each 10 of the most frequently used by authors, a general problem in their selection was verified. The consequences of poor indexation will have an impact on the subsequent recovery of the article by other researchers, thus increasing the lack of visibility of Nursing activity.
